MORRIS, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris volleyball team returned the favor to the University of Wisconsin-Superior on Friday night at James Gremmels Court. After being swept by the Yellowjackets on the road earlier this season, the Cougars gave the visitors the same treatment with a 3-0 (25-13, 25-13, 25-21) romp. The win evens the UMN Morris record at 12-12 (9-4 UMAC) on the season.
The opening set was close to start, tied as late as 7-7. From there, Minnesota Morris scored five out of six points with a pair of kills from
Lydia Nash for a 12-8 lead. At 12-10, the Cougars reeled off six straight that included three aces from
Maggie Jones. UMN Morris also tallied six of the last seven points of the set, with two kills from
Anna Molstad.
The Cougars never trailed in the second set and scored seven out of eight points at one early juncture to take a 14-6 advantage over the Yellowjackets. Down the stretch, Minnesota Morris closed out the set by scoring eight of the last 10 points, helped along by four UW-Superior errors to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
The third and final set proved to be the most competitive. UW-Superior led by as many as three points in the early going. Tied at 11-11, Minnesota Morris scored five straight with
Laura Wellbrock providing two kills and assisting on a block to take a five-point lead. Kills from Nash and Wellbrock extended the Cougar edge to seven, 20-13. Though the Yellowjackets closed to within two points down the stretch, Minnesota Morris held on get the sweep after a
Brooke Christensen kill.
Wellbrock ended with 10 kills on the night, with Jones adding eight and Molstad chipping in seven. Wellbrock also made it a double-double with 11 digs.
McKenzie Newton recorded 31 assists and eight digs.
Sydney Eckhoff led the Cougars with 15 digs and
Alyssa Ukestad had 14 digs to become the all-time leader in program history in that category.
Tomorrow morning will be Senior Day at James Gremmels Court as Minnesota Morris hosts Northland College at 11 a.m.
