MANKATO, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris women's soccer team suffered a 5-0 defeat at Bethany Lutheran College on Wednesday, dropping the Cougars to 2-7-2 (2-3-2 UMAC) on the season.
Things started well for Minnesota Morris, with a shot from
Jadyn Sondrol a minute in forcing a save from Bethany Lutheran keeper Brooke Wolanin. Less than two minutes later,
Monica Calderon had a shot cleared off the line following a corner kick for the Cougars.
Action went back and forth quite a bit in the opening few minutes, with both teams generating chances. It was Bethany Lutheran who got on the board though, with a handball in the box resulting in a penalty kick slotted home by Juana Quevado in the 14th minute. As the clock reached the 18th minute, the Vikings doubled their lead with a shot on the edge of the area from Ashley Casper. With less than 90 seconds remaining in the first half, Bethany Lutheran made it 3-0 on a Googie Mueller goal.
Minnesota Morris created chances in the second half, but Wolanin made six saves on shots from six different Cougars to preserve the shutout. Bethany Lutheran put things away with additional goals in the 65th and 75th minutes.
The Cougars will return to action on Saturday with a 2 p.m. contest in New Ulm against Martin Luther College.
