DAVENPORT, Fla. – The University of Minnesota Morris baseball team swept the University of Maine-Farmington in a doubleheader on Tuesday, dominating in the first game by a score of 15-0 before
Alex Baumann cranked a walk-off home run in the second matchup of the day to lift the Cougars to a 6-5 victory.
The Cougars play a single, 9-inning game tomorrow afternoon against SUNY Fredonia starting at 1:30 p.m. (EDT) in Auburndale, Fla. at Lake Myrtle Park.
Game One: Minnesota Morris 15, Maine-Farmington 0
Minnesota Morris scored in every inning but the fourth as the day opened with a rout of the Beavers.
Cole Mammenga fanned eight in 6.0 innings of work while allowing only three hits and
Josh Osten finished it off and maintained the shutout in the seventh inning for the Cougars.
The first inning started with a base hit and a stolen base from
Joe Pelle before Baumann drove him in with a double. Baumann would later score on a wild pitch and
Ben Meuser added another run by running home from third on a stolen base attempt from
Evan Benson.
The Cougars added another run with a two-out rally in the second inning.
Logan Graves singled to keep the inning alive and then stole second before Pelle drove him in for a 4-0 advantage.
A Maine-Farmington error with two outs in the third inning allowed three unearned runs to cross the plate for Minnesota Morris. The error came with
David Steffen at the plate and both Meuser and
Tyler Scheler scored on the play. Later,
Keegan Jonas singled to drive in Steffen.
Pelle drove in a pair in the fifth inning and
Noah Kloss grounded out but drove in Scheler in the sixth after Scheler led off with a double. That left the score at 10-0, but the Cougars weren't done yet. Following a walk from Graves to start the top of the seventh,
Ty Beasley and
Ethan Schmitz had back-to-back RBI hits to make it 12-0. Schmitz then scored on an error and Steffen singled home
Branden Carlson and
Owen Dylong for a 15-0 edge.
Pelle ended the game 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Scheler was 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored. Meuser and Steffen also added multi-hit games for the Cougars.
Game Two: Minnesota Morris 6, Maine-Farmington 5
The second game was much tougher for Minnesota Morris. Maine-Farmington led most of the way after an opening run in the second inning and the Cougars didn't take the lead until the bottom of the fifth. Holding a 3-1 lead through six, UMN Morris gave up the lead with a four-run top of the seventh for the Beavers before Baumann saved the Cougars with his three-run home run to end it.
Maine-Farmington took the lead with a solo home run off the bat of Troy Johnson in the top of the second and held onto that advantage until the bottom of the fifth. In that inning, Schmitz finished a long at-bat with a walk, was moved along to second by Dylong and Graves then loaded the bases with a single. A groundout from Pelle leveled the game at 1-1 and Baumann followed with a sac fly to bring Dylong home for a 2-1 lead.
One inning later,
Tyler Carper led off the sixth with a double and scored on a single from Steffen to increase the Cougar lead to 3-1.
Minnesota Morris was within one out of wrapping things up in the top of the seventh when a double from Hunter LaBossiere scored two Beaver baserunners and tied the game up at 3-3. The next batter, Riley Bartell, connected on a two-run homer to left to give Maine-Farmington a 5-3 lead before the Cougars could get out of the inning.
Down to their last at-bat, Minnesota Morris was unfazed. Graves led off the inning with a single, then went to third when Pelle followed him with a single. That set the stage for Baumann, representing the winning run. On the first pitch of the at-bat, Baumann unleashed a three-run shot to left that closed out the Cougar victory.
Baumann and Graves were each 2-for-3 in the game for Minnesota Morris.
Joey Reinarts got a no-decision on the day, but went 5.0 innings and allowed just the one run while striking out four.
Ryan Wilhelm had a perfect sixth inning in relief and
Brian Vanyo picked up the win.
