Cougar Baseball Defeats Plattsburgh State Under the Lights

Minnesota Morris made up its rainout from Saturday with a 5-2 victory over the Cardinals on Monday night.

DAVENPORT, Fla. – The University of Minnesota Morris baseball team got itself back in the win column on Wednesday night with a 5-2 victory over Plattsburgh State. Originally scheduled for Saturday but then rained out, the Cougars and Cardinals were able to reschedule for Monday night and the win lifted the Cougars to 2-3 overall on the season.

Tyler Carper got the start on the mound for Minnesota Morris and was solid throughout the night. Plattsburgh State took the lead in the first inning on a pair of infield singles and an error from the Cougar defense to take a 1-0 lead with an unearned run. The Cardinals wouldn't score again on Carper through the rest of his 5.0 innings of work which earned him the win to move to 1-1 on the season.

Minnesota Morris tied the game in the bottom of the second inning with a lead-off home run from Ben Meuser. Later in the inning, after Evan Benson had singled and eventually moved to third, Michael Nezerka grounded out to score him for a 2-1 lead.

The lead ballooned to 4-1 in the fourth inning. Both Meuser and Benson were aboard with one out when Ethan Schmitz reached on a fielder's choice ground ball. Plattsburgh State opted to try to throw home for the tag at the plate but Meuser beat the throw. With Schmitz and Benson on the corners, the Cougars successfully executed a double-steal to bring Benson home.

Plattsburgh State got one run back in the top of the sixth with a solo home run, but William Loesch struck out the side to limit the damage and keep Minnesota Morris up by two runs. Colin Lindgren took over starting in the seventh inning and went the rest of the way to pick up the three-inning save.

The final run of the night came in the bottom of the eighth. Tyler Scheler led off with a triple and Benson walked with one out. With two down, the Cougars went for the double-steal again. Though Benson was eventually tagged out on the play, it came after Scheler had raced home, giving UMN Morris a little more insurance going into the ninth.

Joe Pelle and Alex Baumann were the table-setters at the top of the order for Minnesota Morris on the night, each going 2-for-4.

Minnesota Morris is back in action on Tuesday with a doubleheader against the University of Maine-Farmington beginning at 2:30 p.m. (EDT).
