WINONA, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris women's soccer team began its 2022 season with a 3-0 loss at Saint Mary's University on Thursday afternoon.
The Cougars played tough defense throughout and kept Saint Mary's off the board until the 55th minute when a turnover off a goal kick resulted in a quick attacking opportunity for the Cardinals that was finished off by Ella Lahart.
Saint Mary's doubled its lead in the 64th minute as Brooklyn McKinney cut back inside onto her left foot and went up high to beat
Bernadette Cienik for a 2-0 advantage. The match stayed there until the closing minutes when Lauryn Skoruppa added a third SMU goal against a tiring Cougar back line.
Cienik ended with eight saves in the match for Minnesota Morris.
The Cougars make their 2022 home debut on Sunday afternoon, hosting Augsburg University at 4 p.m.
