MORRIS, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris women's soccer team fell to Augsburg University in the home opener on Sunday, 8-0. The Cougars were without a number of contributors and were fatigued late in the match as the Auggies pulled away.
The scoring opened in the fifth minute when the Cougars were whistled for a foul in the penalty area. Jaelyn Nedelcoff stepped up and converted the PK to give Augsburg a 1-0 lead. Jennifer Bobaric added a goal in the 26th minute and Alanna Franklin scored in the 43rd minute to give the visitors a 3-0 lead at the half.
As the match wore on, the depth and reinforcements of Augsburg began to take a toll on the thin Minnesota Morris squad. Nedelcoff scored in the 55th minute, followed by a goal from Megan Hensel in the 64th minute, a second for Franklin in the 68th minute, Allison Hookom in the 77th minute, and a third from Franklin in the 80th minute to complete the hat trick.
The Cougars managed 10 shots in the match, with four on frame.
Bella Toth had four shots (one on goal),
Sofia Montoya had a pair of shots on goal, and
Monica Calderon attempted two shots as well.
Bernadette Cienik finished with 18 saves.
Minnesota Morris is back in action on Wednesday, hosting Concordia-Moorhead at 4 p.m. at Cougar Field.
