ST. PAUL, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris men's soccer team attempted to rally in the second half, but ended up falling to the University of Northwestern on Saturday night by a score of 4-1.
Northwestern jumped ahead in the 11th minute of the match when the Minnesota Morris back line headed out a cross attempt from the Eagles. Unfortunately, the ball was still in the final third and Tinjum flicked a shot from 25 yards out that hit the side netting, leaving
Lucas Harmon no chance of making a save. The best chance for the Cougars in the first half came half-an-hour in when
Tristan Cruz forced a giveaway in midfield and a cross into
Carter Watkinson resulted in an on-target header that was saved by Andrew Skoglund.
The Eagles netted their second goal in the 57th minute on a nicely-worked move through midfield and a weighted pass into Tinjum's path that he bent around Harmon to make it 2-0.
A goal from
Carter Watkinson in the 68th minute gave Minnesota Morris a lifeline.
Preston Wachter came forward to deliver a pass to
Cooper Jones and Jones first-timed a ball over the top to Watkinson. Watkinson shook free from the Northwestern defense and lofted a header off a hop over the top of Skoglund to make it 2-1.
Tinjum completed his hat trick less than five minutes later to put Northwestern back up by two goals. David DeLoye and a pair of Cougar defenders went to turf in the 18-yard box, but DeLoye was the first to recover and played a ball to the middle where Tinjum snuck a ball into the corner. In the final five minutes of the match, Jonathan-Thomas Olsen added a final tally for the Eagles to put it out of reach.
Harmon finished with four saves in net for the Cougars. Watkinson ended the night with four shots (three on goal), while
Jacob Lee added another two shots.
Minnesota Morris returns home on Tuesday to face Crown College at 4:30 p.m.
