Men’s Soccer Snatches Deserved Point from Polars

A penalty kick goal for the Cougars with four seconds remaining resulted in a 2-2 draw with Crown.

MORRIS, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris men's soccer team scored on a penalty kick with four seconds remaining to draw with Crown College on Tuesday, 2-2. The second tie between the teams in 10 days leaves the Cougars at 0-7-2 (0-2-2 UMAC) on the season.

Minnesota Morris opened the scoring in the 10th minute with a lovely goal from Cooper Jones. Carter Watkinson sent in a low cross from the right that was knocked away from the Crown goal, but Tommy Ellis was able to pass it backwards to Jones and he first-timed it from 20 yards into the lower-left corner for a 1-0 lead. Lucas Harmon made five saves in the first half to keep UMN Morris ahead at the break.

Jones was unlucky not to add to the lead early in the second half when a back-post header hit the crossbar to keep it a one-goal game. Joaquin Silva then managed to level the match in the 57th minute, slotting home from close range and knotting the score at 1-1.

Another chance for Minnesota Morris came in the 75th minute with a quick burst forward from Dominik Cantu-Polster. His shot was saved by Leo Roque, as was the follow-up header from Colin Renner to keep the match deadlocked.

With time winding down in the second half, Tim Jaeger scored shortly after a Crown corner kick to give the Polars a 2-1 lead. Down to the final 15 seconds of the match, the Polars were given a yellow card which stopped the clock and allowed Minnesota Morris to move forward into the penalty area for a free kick. On the delivery, Crown was whistled for a push in the back, resulting in a penalty kick for Jones. The sophomore coolly finished it off to bring the score even at 2-2 with four seconds remaining.

Harmon finished the day with seven saves in goal for Minnesota Morris. Jones had a total of four shots in the match while Hammond had three and Watkinson added two.

Minnesota Morris hosts Northland College on Friday starting at 4:30 p.m.
