MORRIS, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris men's soccer team fell in a hard-nosed matchup with Northland College on Friday evening, 1-0. The LumberJacks scored with a man advantage in the 67th minute and though the Cougars pressed to find the equalizer once the visitors had also been reduced to 10 men, they were unable to put one past Jamie Colvill.
A rugged first half had Northland on the attack, but of the 11 shots taken by the visitors only two were on target and both were handled by Minnesota Morris keeper
Lucas Harmon. For the Cougars,
Carson Friestad had a pair of shots saved by Colvill to keep the match knotted at 0-0.
The chippy play between the sides continued in the second half and Minnesota Morris was reduced to 10 men when
Micah Winningham was shown a second yellow card just past the hour mark. Soon after, Northland had space down the right and a ball played to the far post was finished by Quinn Bieber at a tight angle to give the LumberJacks the lead.
In the 76th minute, Northland would also lose a player as Julien Ruoppolo was upgraded to a red card following his second yellow-card infraction of the contest. No longer at a disadvantage, Minnesota Morris pressed its numbers forward to look for the tying goal, but six shots down the closing stretch of the match were mostly off target.
Harmon finished the match with four saves.
Carver Hammond and
Carter Watkinson each attempted three shots for the Cougars.
Minnesota Morris will be bak at Cougar Field on Saturday to host the University of Wisconsin-Superior at 4:30 p.m.
