ST. PAUL, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris women's soccer team fought to a scoreless 0-0 draw at the University of Northwestern on Saturday afternoon.
Bernadette Cienik made 15 saves in the tie, moving past TL Jordan (2013-16) for first place in all-time career saves for the Cougar program. Cienik now has 356 in her four-year career. The tie moves UMN Morris to 1-5-1 (1-1-1 UMAC) on the season.
The first half was evenly-matched between the two sides, with Northwestern managing to outshoot the Cougars, 9-8, over the first 45 minutes. Six of the first seven shots of the match came from Minnesota Morris, with
Harper Toward,
Jadyn Sondrol, and
Kim Peters all forcing saves from UNW keeper Delaynee Bohatta.
Things were reversed in the second half and Northwestern began to apply much more pressure on the Cougar goal, but Cienik and the rest of the Minnesota Morris defense were up to the task. Cienik made three saves in a one-minute span early in the second half and continued to deny the Eagles as the match progressed. The Cougars had a couple solid chances off of corner kicks as the match ticked on and then had a golden opportunity denied by Northwestern substitute goalkeeper Reagan Flaschberger in the 84th minute when Peters chased down a ball before it crossed the end line and played a ball in to
Monica Calderon. Only a reflex save from Flaschberger kept the Cougars from taking the lead with little time remaining.
Calderon led Minnesota Morris on the day with three shots (two on target). Peters, Sondrol, Toward,
Matteya Borah, and
Bella Toth all had two shots apiece.
Minnesota Morris returns home to Cougar Field for three matches next week, beginning with a 2 p.m. matchup with Crown College on Sept. 27.
