MORRIS, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris women's soccer team earned a measure of revenge over Crown College at Cougar Field. After losing to the Polars, 4-0, to start UMAC play, Minnesota Morris came back from a goal down on Tuesday to come away with a 2-1 victory. The Cougars improve to 2-5-1 (2-1-1 UMAC) on the season.
Crown enjoyed a big edge in total shots in the match, but mostly sent those shots in towards
Bernadette Cienik from long range. The Polars were able to open the scoring with that formula in the 29th minute however. Off a punt from Cienik, Crown controlled the ball in the midfield and Abigail Shull was able to spot Cienik slow to backtrack towards the goal, booting the ball in from 40 yards out to give the visitors the lead.
The Polars only led for about two minutes.
Monica Calderon slipped a ball to a charging
Kim Peters who was challenged by Crown keeper Ellie Taylor outside the area. Maintaining possession into the box, Peters was taken down by Taylor for a yellow card for the goalkeeper and a penalty-kick opportunity for Minnesota Morris.
Harper Toward finished things off from there to make it 1-1.
A vital play in the final two minutes of the first half saw
Kayla Nelson clear a shot from Ashley Pierce off the line following a corner kick from Crown, maintaining the 1-1 score line into the intermission.
The second half followed a similar pattern to the first, with Crown taking numerous shots from distance and Minnesota Morris looking to spring players on a counterattack. The result was nearly 45 minutes of scoreless soccer until things sprang to life at the very end. After the Polars were unsuccessful on a through ball that rolled to Cienik, Toward collected the ball and weaved through the midfield, delivering a pass to Peters with room to run. Peters and Taylor collided once again outside the penalty area, but the ball trickled into the path of
Jadyn Sondrol to slot home with just over a minute remaining. One final Crown shot attempt sailed high in the final seconds to preserve the victory for the Cougars.
Cienik finished the day with 14 saves. Sondrol led the Cougars with four total shots, while Toward and
Bella Toth had two apiece.
Minnesota Morris stays home at Cougar Field on Friday to host Northland College at 2 p.m.
