Fast Start Propels Crown Past Men’s Soccer

The Polars scored three times in the first 23 minutes en route to a 4-1 win on Wednesday.

MORRIS, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris men's soccer team stumbled out of the gates on Wednesday as Crown College put three goals on the board in the opening 23 minutes and handled things from there in a 4-1 victory over the Cougars.

The Polars had three different goal scorers in the first half as Joaquin Silva tallied in the third minute, followed by an Ashton Hosler goal in the 18th minute courtesy of Jose Lovera before Lovera tacked on one himself in the 23rd minute. It could have been worse early on for the Cougars if not for the play of Nick Isensee as the sophomore keeper made four saves in the first half, including three in that opening flurry. Minnesota Morris managed just one shot on target in the first half, a long-distance effort from Will Marsan that was handled by Leo Roque.

The Cougars began to assert themselves more in the second half and finally saw their efforts pay off in the 68th minute. Marsan rang a shot off the post, but the rebound deflected into a Crown defender and into the net for an own goal that made it 3-1. As UMN Morris pressed forward looking for more, the Polars took advantage with a shot from Isaac Schulz that was saved but into the path of recent substitute Timmy Jackson to finish off, making it 4-1 with 15 minutes remaining.

Isensee finished the afternoon with eight saves in goal for Minnesota Morris. Marsan and Carter Watkinson each attempted four shots apiece, with three more coming from Tommy Ellis.

Minnesota Morris heads to Ashland, Wis. to face Northland College on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
