ASHLAND, Wis. – The University of Minnesota Morris men's soccer team hung tough with Northland College for a half, but the LumberJacks stepped on the gas and had their final three goals come in a nine-minute stretch midway through the second half in a 5-0 win.
Both shots produced by Minnesota Morris came in the first half, with
Carter Watkinson steering one wide in the 15th minute before a
Gavin Tarbox effort was saved in the 17th minute. The match was scoreless until the 28th minute when a foul was whistled on the Cougars in the penalty area and Harrison Tibbetts dispatched the resulting spot kick to give Northland a 1-0 lead.
Neither side had much to show for the opening minutes of the second half until Northland suddenly doubled its lead on a fantastic touch from Sorel Richardson that he then blasted past
Jay Clarksen to make it 2-0. From there, the LumberJacks pressed their advantage and were rewarded with three more goals to finish things off. Tibbetts scored his second of the day in the 71st minute. Victor Vancauteren added another in the 75th minute and Anthony Morales added the final tally in the 79th minute.
Clarksen made two saves on the afternoon for the Cougars.
Minnesota Morris returns to Cougar Field on Tuesday afternoon, hosting Martin Luther College at 3:30 p.m.
