MORRIS, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris men's soccer team took a point away from its home matchup with Martin Luther College, ending with a 0-0 draw against the Knights on Tuesday afternoon.
Despite the final score, the day featured back-and-forth action throughout in an evenly played match. Total shots ended with a slight edge to the Cougars, 11-10, though the margin was much wider in shots on goal as Minnesota Morris forced seven saves to just two for Martin Luther.
One of those two
Nick Isensee saves came in the seventh minute when he pushed a Stephen Wietzke shot off the crossbar. Minnesota Morris then hit the post in the 13th minute on a
Gavin Tarbox laser from a tight angle.
Carter Watkinson, Dom Cantu-Polster, and
Matt Gearou all had shots saved by Zachary Pausma before the break to keep things level.
Early in the second half, Minnesota Morris was the victim of the post again. After Watkinson started the break and crossed to
Cooper Jones in the 18-yard box, Jones hit the right post and saw the rebound come to
Tommy Ellis. Ellis promptly put the ball in the back of the net, but was shown the offside flag for his positioning when Jones took his shot. Gearou and Tarbox had shots saved by Zachary Pausma later in the match to preserve the draw, while Isensee made a diving save in the 84th minute to deny Nathan Pausma.
Minnesota Morris is back at Cougar Field on Saturday, hosting the University of Northwestern at 3:30 p.m.
