MORRIS, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris women's soccer team produced plenty of chances, but managed only three shots on goal in a 2-0 loss to Martin Luther College on Tuesday.
Much of the first half had Minnesota Morris in possession and on the attack. The Cougars had 10 of their 16 shots in the first 45 minutes, with two shots ending up on target. Efforts from
Bella Toth in the 12th minute and
Kim Peters in the 17th minute were saved by Rebekah Schroeder to keep UMN Morris off the board. Against the run of play, Martin Luther opened the scoring right as the match reached 30 minutes old. A deflected pass from the Knights fell to the feet of Hailey Rice and she delivered a left-footed strike that just sneaked its way past
Danielle Reinhard to make it 1-0 at the half.
The second half was more evenly-played than the first, but Minnesota Morris continued to press forward and create chances that Martin Luther often booted clear to relieve some of the pressure. The clincher for the Knights was scored in the 75th minute when Katie Schoeneck got off a shot that looked to be curling wide until ricocheting off a Cougar defender and into the back of the net to give MLC a 2-0 edge. In the final 15 minutes,
Maddie Schneider had a shot on target that was saved by Schroeder. Toth and Peters combined for four more shots that narrowly missed the mark as well.
Reinhard ended the afternoon with nine saves. Toth attempted six shots, while Peters came up with four. Schneider and
Jadyn Sondrol added two each.
Minnesota Morris will close out its home schedule on Saturday with a 1 p.m. match against the University of Northwestern.
