Women’s Soccer Settles for a Draw at Martin Luther

The Cougars led most of the way, but the Knights drew level with less than six minutes remaining in the 1-1 tie.

NEW ULM, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris women's soccer team took a point away from its UMAC opener on Wednesday at Martin Luther College. After going ahead in the 30th minute the Cougars nearly got to the finish line, but the Knights leveled the score in the 84th minute to earn the 1-1 draw. UMN Morris now sits at 0-4-1 (0-0-1 UMAC) on the season.

The Cougars came out and set the tone in the opening minutes, though Danielle Reinhard was forced to make a few saves of long-distance efforts from Martin Luther that didn't cause too much trouble for the first-year keeper. Minnesota Morris capitalized on its early chances with a goal on the half-hour mark. Jay Kwateh took control of a Knight giveaway in midfield and then dribbled past several defenders to get to the right wing. A dangerous cross made it past the front post and fell to Kim Peters who slid in for the nice finish, giving the Cougars a 1-0 halftime advantage.

Three early shots from Minnesota Morris failed to add onto the lead quickly after halftime and Reinhard was eventually called upon to make an excellent save in the 55th minute to keep the Cougars in front.

As the half wore on, UMN Morris managed only two more shots from Peters. On the other end, Martin Luther was pushing for the equalizer and finally broke through with a goal from Katie Schoeneck with less than six minutes remaining to knot the score at 1-1. In the final minutes, a Cougar shot from Malia Totoris sailed wide for the final Minnesota Morris opportunity of the evening.

Bella Toth finished the match with five shots, while Peters provided another four. Reinhard was credited with nine saves on the day.

Minnesota Morris returns to Cougar Field on Saturday, hosting the University of Wisconsin-Superior at 4:30 p.m.
