MORRIS, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris women's soccer team bounced back from a disappointing first half by scoring twice in the first two minutes of the second half, however that would be as close as it would get for the Cougars in a 5-2 loss to the University of Wisconsin-Superior. The loss puts UMN Morris at 0-5-1 (0-1-1 UMAC) on the season.
UW-Superior jumped out to a quick lead with goals in the third minute from Mya Holmquist and the eighth minute from Niya Wilson. A shot from
Malia Totoris forced a save from Yellowjacket keeper Jenna Lang in the 27th minute and shortly thereafter another goal from Wilson staked UWS to a 3-0 cushion at the break.
A spirited Minnesota Morris side came out of the break.
Kim Peters forced a giveaway in the UW-Superior penalty area, then hit a shot that hit the underside of the crossbar and in to put the Cougars on the board within 20 seconds of the restart.
Shortly after that,
Jadyn Sondrol got in on the act by forcing a Yellowjacket turnover. She then had a shot go over Lang and into the top corner, making it 3-2 in the 47th minute.
Totoris and Sondrol would each have shots later in the second half that required the efforts of Lang to keep from going in, but Holmquist completed her hat trick with goals in the 51st and 61st minutes to put the finishing touches on a 5-2 win for the Yellowjackets.
Danielle Reinhard finished the match with six saves for Minnesota Morris.
The Cougars will travel to take on Crown College on Sept. 19 at 7 p.m.
