ST. PAUL, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris men's soccer team scored late in the match to add some intrigue to the final minutes, but the University of Northwestern hung on for a 2-1 win on Saturday afternoon.
A series of Northwestern shots in the first quarter of an hour required three saves from
Nick Isensee to keep things level, but the offensive pressure of the Eagles soon provided a goal in the 25th minute. Awarded a penalty kick on a Minnesota Morris foul in the 18-yard box, Simeon Friesen's spot kick just beat Isensee as the Cougar goalkeeper went the right way but couldn't get a hand to it. A shot late in the half from
Gavin Tarbox was kept out by Kyle Dipzinski to maintain the advantage for Northwestern.
With five minutes gone in the second half, Northwestern doubled its lead on a giveaway in the midfield from the Cougars. A pass ahead from Garrett Miers played Curtis Tinjum into space and he rounded Isensee and delivered at an acute angle to give the Eagles a 2-0 advantage.
Outside of a shot from
Will Marsan, Minnesota Morris couldn't muster much in the way of attacking threat for the next half hour. As time ticked away, Northwestern threw the Cougars a lifeline with a poor touch in midfield that gave Dominic Cantu-Polster a breakaway opportunity after the pass from
Carter Watkinson. Cantu-Polster beat Dipzinski to the ball and shot it over the top of the onrushing goalkeeper from distance to make it 2-1. That would turn out to be the final Cougar shot of the match as Northwestern held on to get the victory.
Isensee ended his afternoon with five saves in goal for Minnesota Morris.
The Cougars come home on Tuesday, hosting Bethany Lutheran College at Cougar Field at 2 p.m.
