MORRIS, Minn. - The University of Minnesota Morris Men's Soccer team hosted Northland College in their first home game in almost a month. The Cougars came away from the tough matchup with a 3-1 victory to advance their UMAC record to 3-7 on the season.
The Cougar offense dominated the first half of this matchup, maintaining primary possession and challenging the Northland defense by pushing the ball up and taking shots on goal. Brett Bartkowicz took the first shot just twenty seconds into the game, finding the net but being unable to get his shot past the goalkeeper. Minnesota Morris racked up shots early in the half but the first goal of the game came in the 24th minute. Bartkowicz found Jones on a pass that allowed Jones to drive the ball into the back of the net. The rest of the half remained scoreless, despite shots from Aaron Mackall, Whitaker Root, and Chann Piseth.Â
Minnesota Morris scored their second goal of the game early in the second half. Bartkowicz, assisted by Mackall, found the net in the 48th minute to give the Cougars a 2-0 lead on their opponents. The Lumberjacks scored their first goal of the game on a penalty kick in the six yard box in the 62nd minute. Still up one, Minnesota Morris continued to dominate possession of the ball, taking ten shots on goal before scoring their third goal. Root found Jones on a corner kick, who headed the ball into the goal to put the Cougars up 3-1. The final whistle blew with the scoreboard showing 3-1 for the home team.
Bartkowicz led the Cougar scoring effort with five shots, placing four on net and scoring one goal. He also had one assist on the day. Mackall and Root both totaled up three shots on goal and one assist for Minnesota Morris. Jones took three shots, scoring on the two shots he placed on goal. Nick Isensee played all ninety minutes in goal for the Cougars, making four saves and breaking the single season saves record.Â
Men's Soccer will head on the road Oct. 22 for a 1 pm matchup against Martin Luther before coming home to finish out the regular season with three games on Cougar Field.Â
