MORRIS, Minn. - The University of Minnesota Morris Cougars hosted the North Central University Rams on Cougars Field. The Cougars came out of the day with a 2-1 victory, advancing to 2-7-2 in conference play.
The Cougar offense got things rolling early in the first half as
Katelin McElroy, making her collegiate debut, took a shot two minutes into the game. The first goal for the home team came shortly after from a penalty kick taken by
Greta Keffer in the third minute of the game. Minnesota Morris dominated possession of the ball for the remainder of the first half, taking shots and challenging the Ram's keeper. The Cougar defense allowed no scoring opportunities for North Central, and the home team led 1-0 going into halftime.
Minnesota Morris looked to expand their lead early in the second half, but did not find their second goal until late in the half.
Bella Toth found
Johnette Nagbe across the field, who dribbled the ball past multiple Ram's defenders to put the ball in the back of the net in the 80th minute. North Central responded with their first goal in the 87th minute, bringing the Cougar lead back down to one. Unable to answer in the last three minutes, Minnesota Morris remained up 2-1 at full time.
Nagbe led the Cougar's offense with six shots and a goal on the day. Toth and
Rylie Lovec have five shots each, with Toth also having an assist. Keffer totaled up four shots during the match and scored the first goal of the game for Minnesota Morris.
The Cougars will play their final game of the season Nov. 2 against Bethany Lutheran College (3:30 pm).
