COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris baseball team fell in a non-conference matchup at Saint John's University on Wednesday, 15-2, in seven innings. The Cougars head back into UMAC play with a record of 9-12 overall.
Saint John's struck early in the contest, scoring twice in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice fly and a wild pitch. The lead then grew to 7-0 in the second inning on a bases-clearing triple, a sacrifice fly, and a solo home run.
The Johnnies tacked on another five runs in the bottom of the third on six hits to extend their advantage to 12-0. Hitless through the first three innings, Minnesota Morris got a baserunner aboard with a lead-off single from
Ashton Pauly in the fourth inning. Saint John's then added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth as the advantage built to 14-0 heading into the sixth.
Pauly's second hit of the day led off the top of the sixth and was followed by a single from
Owen Dylong to put two aboard. A RBI double to left from
Ryan McGie brought both runners home for the only two Cougar runs of the afternoon. Saint John's scored once in the bottom of the inning and Minnesota Morris was unable to extend the game in the seventh as the Johnnies turned a game-ending double play.
Ethan Schmitz (0-2) took the loss on the hill for the Cougars.
Jacob Tobritzhofer had the best success of any UMN Morris reliever, pitching a 1-2-3 inning in the fourth.
Minnesota Morris has Martin Luther College coming to Chizek Field for a three-game series on Friday and Saturday. The first game of the series is slated for Friday afternoon at 2 p.m.
