Defensive Resilience on Display: Cougar Women Fall Short Despite Strong Defensive Performance

MORRIS, Minn. - The University of Minnesota Morris Women's Soccer team took on the University of Wisconsin - River Falls Falcons at home to start their final week of non-conference play. The Cougars fell 5-0 to the Falcons, putting up a fight on defense but being unable to make things happen on offense.

The first half went scoreless for both sides, despite many shots on the Minnesota Morris net from River Falls. The Falcons opened the scoring for the match in the 33rd minute of the first half, sneaking a ball past the hands of CJ Frear-Boerner. Despite a tough offensive display from the Falcons, the Cougar defense held the score at 1-0 going into halftime.

The second half started with a very early goal by River Falls in the 45th minute, putting them up 2-0 on Minnesota Morris. The Cougars continued to battle for a score, but the Falcons were quick to put themselves up 3-0 in the 59th minute. After keeping River Falls at bay for the next 25 minutes, the Cougars let up a fourth goal in the 84th minute of play on a header from a corner kick. A well executed offensive possession led to a fifth River Falls goal with eleven seconds left on the clock to put the Falcons up 5-0 over the Cougars.

Frear-Boerner made 22 saves on the day, coming off of her UMAC Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week award. Madysen Johnson assisted the Cougar defensive effort, blocking shots, executing tackles and making it difficult for the Falcons to score.
