Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Cougars Record First Shutout of the Season

MORRIS, Minn. - The University of Minnesota Morris Men's Soccer team came out of today's match up ahead of the Knights of Martin Luther College. This was the first match of conference play for the Cougars.

The Cougars opened up the scoring fairly early in the match when Aaron Mackall, assisted by teammate Whitaker Root, launched a shot past the Knight's goalie in the twelfth minute of the game to put Minnesota Morris up 1-0. Mackall added another goal to his stat line in the 26th minute. Off an assist from Cooper Jones, Mackall put the ball in the back of the net giving the Cougars a 2-0 lead over Martin Luther. Chann Piseth followed his teammate's lead three minutes later, finding the net on a through ball from Mackall. Piseth's goal flung Minnesota Morris into a significant 3-0 lead. The scoring stopped for the rest of the half, and the score remained 3-0 heading into half time.

The final goal of the game came in the 49th minute. Confused by a huddle of players in front of the net, the Knights were unable to stop the ball from bouncing off one of their players and into the net. This goal put the Cougars into a 4-0 lead. Shots continued to come from both sides on the field, but the score remained cemented 4-0 until the final whistle.

Mackall led the offensive attack for the Cougars, taking three shots on goal and scoring two goals. He also added an assist to the mix. Root and Jones both finished the day with two shots and one assist apiece, being crucial to the team's success. Piseth took two shots and scored one goal. Brandon Patterson subbed in for the Cougars and took two shots of his own. Nick Isensee made four saves and allowed zero goals for Minnesota Morris.

The Cougars will take the pitch again in their second UMAC match up on Sept. 21. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:30 PM on Cougar Field.
