MORRIS, Minn. - The University of Minnesota Morris Women's Soccer team took on the Martin Luther College Knights in their first UMAC match up of the season.Â
The Cougar offense got started early, attacking the Knight's defense and taking shots. The first shot on goal for Minnesota Morris came off the foot of Bella Toth in the 22nd minute. AJ LaFrinier quickly followed suit with a shot of her own on goal in the 26th minute. Martin Luther scored the first and only goal of the match in the 29th minute. The leading scorer for the Knights launched a long ball that bounced just over the outstretched hands of the Cougar's goalie CJ Frear-Boerner. Martin Luther took a 1-0 lead over Minnesota Morris, despite the Cougars racing to even the score in the first half.
Despite being down in scoring, women's soccer continued to battle. Taking four shots on goal in the second half, the Cougars showed their spirit. The Minnesota Morris offense commanded possession of the ball and the defense denied the Knight's attempts to increase their scoring. The final whistle blew with the scoreboard showing 1-0 in favor of Martin Luther despite a solid effort from the Cougars.
Toth led the offense with eight shots, two of which were on goal. Sarah Kuhmer added four shots on the day while LaFrinier, Madysen Johnson, and Maddy Anderson all finished the day with two shots. Both of Anderson's shots were on goal, challenging the Knight's goalkeeper. Frear-Boerner made five saves in the match.
Minnesota Morris will take their home pitch again on Sept. 21 against UW-Superior. The match is scheduled for a 2 PM kickoff.Â
