MORRIS, Minn. - The University of Minnesota Morris Cougars hosted the Crown College Polars in their third UMAC match up of the season. The Polars came out ahead, despite three second half goals from the Cougars.
Crown showed their offensive skills early in this match, pushing the ball into the Cougar defensive zone and forcing the Minnesota Morris defense to adapt. This aggressive play style paid off for the Polars as their first goal came in the 12th minute of the game. The next two goals of the match came back to back for Crown in the 15th and 16th minute respectively. Aaron Mackall took the first shot for the Cougars in the 19th minute, placing the ball on goal but was stopped by the Polars keeper. The fourth goal in the half for the Polars was in the 30th minute. The half retired with Crown dominating Minnesota Morris 4-0.
The Polars lengthened their lead in the 47th minute of the match, putting one more goal in the net to get up five on the Cougars. Minnesota Morris showed their resilience in the second half, scoring their first goal in the 52nd minute. Mackall, assisted by Kenyon Ponce, launched a shot past the Polars keeper to put a mark on the scoreboard for the Cougars. Crown College was quick to respond with their sixth goal of the match in the 60th minute of play. Ponce earned his second assist on the day in the 65th minute with a pass to Theo Bubser that he launched over the Polars' keeper with a left-footed shot. Crown made their seventh and final goal in the 78th minute, solidifying their lead and daring the Cougars to counter. Mackall took the challenge and scored his second goal of the match in the 85th minute. Despite the effort and drive in the second half, the Cougars remained down at full-time with a final score of 3-7.
Mackall led the Cougars' offensive campaign, taking seven shots and scoring two goals. Andreas Garcia, Jacob Lee, Cooper Jones, and Burke Sheppard each took two shots apiece. Bubser tried two as well and scored one goal for Minnesota Morris.
The Cougars will travel to Ashland, Wis. and take on Northland college at 12 pm Sept. 28.
