Cougar Volleyball Sweeps UMAC Opener in 3-0 Victory Over Crown

SAINT BONIFACIUS, Minn. - In an impressive display of skill and teamwork, the University of Minnesota Morris Volleyball team secured a commanding  3-0 victory against Crown College, showing their determination and strength on the court.

Set one remained close with both teams battling to put points on the board. The Cougars started to pull ahead from the Polars after being tied at 16-16. A scoring run that led off with a kill from Tori Scheler allowed the Cougars to pull away to 19-16. Crown was able to put three more points up before a final kill from Mary Cate Ziembiec sealed the deal and ended the set 25-19 in favor of Minnesota Morris.

The Cougars commanded the second set from the first serve. Sydney Petersen threw down a kill to get the scoring going, followed by Lacie O'Leary with an assist from Petersen. Up 6-0 with no sign of slowing down, Minnesota Morris continued to show their athleticism on the floor. Two kills from both Laura Wellbrock and Anna Molstad along with two service aces from Allison Dornseif was what the Cougars needed to finish the set 25-18.

Fired up after losses in the first two sets, the Polars led the Cougars for a majority of the third set. A seven point scoring run at 17-22 was what gave Minnesota Morris the lead. The run, kicked off by a kill from Macey Bosard, was filled with attack errors from the Polars and kills from the Cougars. Bosard threw down a second kill in the run, followed by Ella Johnson. A clutch kill from Bosard with an assist from Dornseif finalized the score of the set at 25-23.

Wellbrock dominated on both offense and defense for the Cougars, throwing down ten kills and ending the day with 24 digs. Dornseif racked up nineteen assists and added on two aces. Ziembiec totaled up two blocks for the Minnesota Morris defense.

Volleyball will head on the road again to take on Northland College Sept. 27 at 7 pm.
