Cougar Volleyball Records Second Sweep in a Row

ASHLAND, Wis. - The University of Minnesota Morris swept the Northland College Lumberjills in their second game of conference play this season. The Cougars took all three sets with a comfortable lead, putting the game to rest early.

The first seven points of the match went to the Cougars with Mary Cate Ziembiec and Sydney Petersen showing their offensive prowess at the net. Lacie O'Leary kicked off the second scoring run that put the Cougars up 11-1 on the Lumberjills. Up 18-3, blocks from Petersen and Madeline Monaco followed by a second one from Tori Scheler and Anna Molstad put Minnesota Morris at a commanding 20-3 lead. Ziembiec and Molstad closed out the set, throwing down kills that Northland could not defend. The Cougars finished the set up 25-5.

The Cougars took the lead over Northland early in the second set, stopping the Lumberjills offense from gaining momentum off their early scoring run. A seven point run that finished with a kill from Braxtyn Meyer put Minnesota Morris up 9-4 on Northland. The Lumberjills battled to close the scoring gap, but the Cougar offense and defense remained dominant, only allowing one other scoring run. Ella Johnson sparked a six points scoring run late in the set that was finished with a kill from Macey Bosard to bring the score to 24-14. Meyer finished off the set with a kill that put the Cougars up 25-15 on Northland.

The third set of the match brought back-and-forth scoring for both teams. Northland College was able to gain a 14-8 lead over the Cougars in an offensive rally. The Lumberjills remained in the lead for a majority of the set. The Cougars were able to respond and take the lead thanks to multiple scoring runs that featured kills from Jada Lego, Scheler, O'Leary, Molstad, and Meyer. The Lumberjills fought to take back the lead, but fell to Minnesota Morris 25-22 to close out the match.

Molstad led the Cougars in kills and blocks with eight and two respectively. Allison Dornsief served up three aces for Minnesota Morris. Petersen assisted in sixteen kills. Bosard totaled up twelve digs on the day.
