Baseball Battles in Close Loss, 9-11

AUBURNDALE, Flor. - Coming off of a close win the day before, the University of Minnesota Morris looked to extend their win streak to two against Nebraska Wesleyan University. Despite a ninth inning rally from the Cougars, the Prairie Wolves' defense secured the 11-9 win leaving Minnesota Morris staring at a two point deficit.

The Prairie Wolves were the first to get on the board in the top of the second inning, but the Cougars answered right back with two runs of their own. Keegan Jonas and James Nelson were brought home on RBIs from Landen Meyerdirk when he launched a double into left field. Nebraska Wesleyan would not let the tie go on for long, scoring four more runs in the top of the third to advance their lead. Minnesota Morris responded with four runs of their own in the bottom of the third to keep things tied up.

Ben Meuser brought Tyler Motley home when he launched a triple out to center field. Meuser then scored on a walk, and Nelson hit into fielder's choice to earn two RBIs and send Ryan McGie and Ethan Schmitz across home plate. The Cougars lept to a brief lead in the bottom of the fourth when Bradie Black scored on a David Steffen RBI. Nebraska Wesleyan picked up runs in the fifth, sixth, and ninth innings to lead 11-7 heading into the bottom of the ninth. Ryan McGie and Ethan Schmitz hit back-to-back doubles, with McGie bringing Steffen in to score and Schmitz earning an RBI when McGie scored. The Prairie Wolves defense locked the Cougars down for the rest of the inning to close out the game at 11-9.

McGie, Steffen, and Meyerdirk all earned two hits on the day for the Minnesota Morris offense. Meyerdirk and Nelson also totaled up two RBIs each. McGie led the Cougar defense with 11 putouts from first base.

Cougar baseball continues with a matchup against SUNY Polytechnic Institute on March 13. The game is scheduled for a 8:30 AM (9:30 AM EDT) start time.
