DAVENPORT, Flor. - The University of Minnesota Morris baseball team took a 5-8 loss in their matchup with SUNY Polytechnic Institute. A five run inning from the Wildcats went unanswered by the Cougars, leaving a three run deficit at the end of the game. Minnesota Morris' record moves to 2-8 with three games yet to play in Florida.
The Cougars broke the scoring open with a run from Ethan Schmitz on an RBI from Landen Meyerdirk in the top of the third. The Wildcats were quick to respond with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning to keep things tied. Minnesota Morris took the lead back in the top of the fourth to get up 3-1. David Steffen was the first to score, with Tyler Motley following him home shortly after. The bottom of the fourth was a big inning for SUNY Poly as they knocked in five runs to take a commanding 6-3 lead.Â
The top of the fifth proved fruitful for Minnesota Morris, resulting in two runs to close the game to 5-6. Bradie Black made his way around the bases on an RBI from Steffen. Meuser was the final Cougar to score on the day, leaving Minnesota Morris short of victory.Â
Steffen and Meyerdirk each earned two hits on the day to lead the Cougar offense, while Steffen, Schmitz, and Meyerdirk earned one RBI apiece. Ryan McGie led the Minnesota Morris defense with 11 putouts from first base.Â
