DAVENPORT, Flor. - The University of Minnesota Morris faced UMass Dartmouth in a double-header to close out their spring break trip. The Cougars took two close losses, falling 3-4 in game one and 4-5 in game two. Minnesota Morris will head straight to conference play after their trip to Florida, kicking off the UMAC regular season with games against Crown College March 21-22.Â
UMass Dartmouth 4, Minnesota Morris 3
The Cougars were the first to put a mark on the board in this game as Bradie Black scored on an RBI from Tyler Motley in the top of the third inning. The Corsairs answered back and more, bringing in two runs in the bottom of the third. It would be three innings until either team scored and Minnesota Morris trailed 1-2 heading into the seventh. Peyton Neadeau brought in Black to score, tying up the game 2-2. Neadeau then scored a run of his own on an RBI from Ashton Pauly to put the Cougars at a one run advantage. Unfortunately, Minnesota Morris could not keep UMass Dartmouth at bay and gave up two runs in the bottom of the seventh to close the game out.Â
Motley and Ryan McGie each had two hits on the for the Cougar offense, with Black adding two runs and Neadeau scoring one. McGie secured six putouts from first base while Jonas added five behind the plate. Jacob Schaaf and Travis Godfrey both appeared on the mound for Minnesota Morris, recording five strikeouts, four flyouts and 11 groundouts between the two of them.
UMass Dartmouth 5, Minnesota Morris 4
It was the Corsair who opened the scoring in game two, bringing in two runs in the top of the first innings to jump to an early lead. Down 2-0 heading into the second, the Cougars made quick work of UMass Dartmouth in a one-two-three inning and scored three in the bottom of the inning to take the lead. Ethan Schmitz was the first to score, and was quickly followed by Aiden Moran and Tyler Moriarty who crossed home on RBIs from Black. The defense on both teams kept the game scoreless for four innings until the Corsairs opened up the seventh with a three run inning. Meyerdirk scored for the Cougars in the bottom of the inning, but Minnesota Morris couldn't respond to their opponent and fell by one run.
Three Cougars earned hits in game two; Black, Schmitz, and Meyerdirk. Black also led the team in RBIs, bringing in two runners. Luke McHugh and Jonas had six putouts at first base and catcher respectively. The pitching trio of McGie, Neadeau, and Breckin Silvain came together for 11 strikeouts of which McGie had five.Â
