High Scoring Matchup Results in 12-16 Loss for Baseball

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The University of Minnesota Morris wrapped up their three game series against the University of Northwestern with a 12-16 loss on day two. An early lead for the Eagles made it hard for the Cougars to take the lead, despite a rally in the fifth and sixth innings of the game. Minnesota Morris moves to 3-3 in UMAC play, and look to improve their record Apr. 4-5 with a series against Northland College.

Bats were flying for the Eagles early in the game as they brought in nine in the top of the first to kick things off. One run in the third, and three more in the top of the fifth gave Northwestern a 13-0 lead early, leaving the Cougars with a deep hole to dig their way out of. Rising to the challenge, Minnesota Morris knocked in nine runs in the bottom of the fifth to close the Eagles' lead to just four runs. Trevor Haberman got the scoring rolling as he scored on a wild pitch by the Eagles. Keegan Jonas and Peyton Neadeau scored the next two runs on a long double from Tyler Moriarty. Tyler Motley brought in Moriarty to score next, before scoring a run of his own on an RBI from David Steffen. Trevor Haberman launched his third home run and first grand slam of the series into play, bringing in Steffen, Ryan McGie, and Bradie Black in to score to finish off the bottom of the fifth.

A five-batter inning from the defense at the top of the sixth gave the Cougars time to keep closing the gap. Blake Imhoff scored the tenth run of the game for Minnesota Morris, bringing the Cougars even closer to Northwestern. Steffen launched a double to right field a few plays later, earning two RBIs as Black and Motley raced their way across home plate to rack up the score to 12-13. Unfortunately, that would be the end of the scoring for the Cougars and runs in the seventh and eighth innings would ultimately secure the victory for Northwestern.

Steffen earned three hits in his five at-bats on the day, with Motley, Black, and Haberman each adding two hits of their own into the mix. Haberman led the Cougars with four RBIs, while Steffen and Moriarty earned three and two respectively. Steffen and Ben Leal were aggressive on the bases as they each took home a stolen base. The pitching staff of Parker Gilchrist, Breckin Silvain, Cole Mammenga, and Josh Osten totaled up six six strikeouts, 11 flyouts, six groundouts, and just two walks between the four of them.
