MANKATO, Minn. - After giving up seven runs in the third inning, the University of Minnesota Morris was left scrambling to catch back up Bethany Lutheran College. After going scoreless for the remainder of the game, the Cougars faced a 10-point scoring deficit following game one of the UMAC tournament. Minnesota Morris will have a chance to continue their playoff run with a 12:00 pm matchup against Crown College on May 9.
The Vikings opened the scoring in the second inning with a single run, to which the Cougars responded with two runs of their own in the top of the third. Ashton Pauly was the first to score, crossing home plate on an RBI from David Steffen after making his way around the bases. Steffen then scored on a long single from Ben Meuser to give Minnesota Morris a brief 2-1 lead. From there on out, it was Bethany Lutheran's game as they went on an 11-0 scoring run and left the Cougars behind.Cougars score two runs on four hits against the Vikings.
The four hits for Minnesota Morris came off the bats of Pauly, Steffen, Ben Meuser, and Tyler Moriarty. Pauly also nabbed a stolen base from the Viking's defense, while Ethan Schmitz wore two pitches from the Bethany Lutheran pitching staff. The Cougars' pitching staff of Josh Osten, Brady Kenning, and Dane Mammenga collected two strikeouts, nine flyouts, and nine groundouts on the day.Â
