STOUT, Wis. – The University of Minnesota Morris women's soccer team fell 2-0 to the University of Wisconsin-Stout on Saturday evening in Stout, Wis.
With the result, the Blue Devils improve to 3-2-1, while the Cougars drop to 1-5-1.
"Very happy with the fight today," said head coach
Emma Morris. "Given a few changes we thought we executed the game plan wee, we just need to start to connect in the final third and we'll be in a good position. CJ had another standout game in net."
The Cougars opened the match aggressively, earning back-to-back corners inside the first two minutes.
Bella Toth took the team's first shot, which was blocked before reaching the goal.
CJ Frear-Boerner made her first save of the night in the second minute.
The first half featured a long stretch without any shots from either side. In the 37th minute, UW-Stout broke the deadlock, taking a 1-0 lead. The Cougars held the Blue Devils scoreless for the remainder of the half, heading into the break down by just one.
In the 67th minute, Toth had a promising chance that went just wide. Three minutes later, UMM earned a free kick.
Madysen Johnson delivered the ball into the box, but the Cougars couldn't convert. On the other end, UW-Stout delivered a dangerous pass across the box, but Frear-Boerner made the save to keep the score at 1-0.
In the final 15 minutes, the Blue Devils doubled their lead with a strike from outside the box that found the back of the net. The Cougars made a few more pushes into the attacking third but couldn't break through, falling by a final score of 2-0.
Frear-Boerner would finished the game with five saves.
The Cougars return home to open Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) play on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. against Bethany Lutheran College.
