Cougars fall on the road to Martin Luther

NEW ULM, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris women's soccer team fell 6-1 to Martin Luther College in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) play Tuesday evening in New Ulm, Minn.

The Knights improved to 6-2-1 overall and 3-0 in the UMAC, while the Cougars dropped to 1-6-2 overall and 0-1-1 in conference play.

CJ Frear-Boerner was tested early, making her first save within the opening two minutes. Johnette Nagbe had the first shot for UMM but pushed it wide in the fifth minute. Over a 15-minute span, the Knights scored three goals to take control of the match. In the final minutes of the first half, a Cougar shot hit the post, but Hope Berscheit was there to collect the rebound and put Minnesota Morris on the board before halftime.

Around the 60-minute mark, Nagbe continued to apply pressure with multiple attempts but couldn't find the target. In the 73rd minute, she had a shot on goal, but the MLC goalkeeper was able to smother it. A foul in the box resulted in a penalty kick for the Knights, which they converted. Just three minutes later, the Cougars earned a penalty kick of their own, but Rourke Nebel's shot went wide. In the final three minutes, MLC added two more goals to secure the 6-1 win.

Hope Berscheit scored her third goal of the season in the loss. Nagbe registered the other Cougar shot on target. Ziviara Cordova and Brianna Ganske each had two shots but were off target. Frear-Boerner finished with nine saves in the match.

Minnesota Morris continues its road trip on Saturday, traveling to the University of Wisconsin-Superior for a 4:30 p.m. kickoff.
