WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The University of Minnesota Morris baseball team fell in its opening game at the RussMatt Invitational, 12–0, to Beloit College Monday morning in Winter Haven, Fla.
Beloit struck first in the top of the first inning to go up 1–0 early. The Cougars had a strong chance to tie the game in the bottom half of the inning.
Tyler Moriarty and
Bradie Black drew back-to-back walks to put two on with no outs. The next two batters went down via strikeout. Moriarty and Black were successful on a double steal, but Moriarty tried to advance to home on the same play and was thrown out to end the inning.
The Buccaneers scored in five of the seven innings as UMM was unable to get consistent baserunners. In the bottom of the seventh,
Ben Meuser drew a walk and
Trevor Haberman reached base after being hit by a pitch. The duo was left stranded as Beloit won 12–0.
The Cougars had five baserunners as the BC pitching staff threw a combined no-hitter. Moriarty, Black, Meuser, and
Luke McHugh all reached via walk, and Haberman was hit by a pitch.
Ryan McGie started on the mound for the Cougars, pitching three innings. In his three innings of work, he struck out three batters.
Zach Anderson,
Tim Buckles, and
Andrew Franson all made their season debuts, combining for the final four innings.
The Cougars will play a doubleheader tomorrow against Moravian University, with first pitch scheduled for 8 a.m.
