BROOKINGS, S.D. – The University of Minnesota Morris baseball team battled Division I South Dakota State University, falling 19–1 Wednesday afternoon in Brookings, S.D. Cougar pitchers recorded eight strikeouts in the loss.
South Dakota State took the lead in the bottom of the first on a solo home run.
Travis Godfrey got out of the inning by recording a pair of strikeouts.
In the top of the third, UMM recorded its first hit with a single from
Peyton Neadeau. The Cougars got on the board in the fourth inning.
Landen Meyerdirk and
Tyler Moriarty drew back-to-back walks, but a double play erased Meyerdirk.
Ryan McGie then doubled to score Moriarty.
The Jackrabbits continued to build their lead, ultimately winning 19–1.
McGie and Neadeau each recorded a hit in the contest, with McGie driving in the lone run. Moriarty scored the Cougars' only run. Neadeau, Meyerdirk, and Moriarty each reached base via walk.
Caleb Walker and Meyerdirk also reached after being hit by pitches.
On the mound, Godfrey started the game, pitching three innings and striking out five batters.
Johnny Lopez and
Kellan Oligmueller each pitched an inning and recorded a strikeout.
Tim Buckles was called upon to get the final two outs and did so while facing just two batters.
The Cougars return to Upper Midwest Athletic Conference play on Saturday as they travel to the University of Wisconsin–Superior for a three-game series starting at 1 p.m.
