MORRIS, Minn. – In a game with 12 cards, the University of Minnesota Morris men's soccer team defeated the University of Wisconsin-Stout 3-1 Saturday evening in Morris, Minn.
The Cougars recorded the first shot on goal of the game, with
Jake Anargyros testing the goalkeeper in the 10th minute. Minnesota Morris continued to put pressure on the goalkeeper, with
Patrick Bednarczyk,
Luis Mendez, and
Nehemiah Zappetta recording shots. UMM broke the seal after Bednarczyk found the back of the net off the rebound of Zappetta's shot. Two minutes later, the Cougars doubled their lead after Anargyros sent a curling shot that was out of reach of the keeper.
The Blue Devils started to test
Dutch Bullock in net. Bullock kept the lead at two, making a handful of saves. Both teams had a few more chances, but the Cougars took their 2-0 lead into halftime.
It did not take long for UMM to extend its lead as Angel "Bam" Perez Leon sent a low-driven shot that went under the goalkeeper for his first collegiate goal.
Evan Karki set up the goal with a pass into the box to Mendez, who laid it off to Perez Leon. The Blue Devils dumped the ball behind the Cougar back line, which Sven Oberg ran onto and scored to bring the lead back down to two.
The first red card of the match came in the 71st minute as the last defender took out Mendez just outside the box. Anargyros fired a shot, but it deflected out for a corner kick. In the 84th minute, Anargyros was taken out inside the box, earning a penalty kick, but he was unable to convert. The match ended 3-1 in favor of the Cougars.
Bednarczyk and Perez Leon both scored their first collegiate goals in the win, while Anargyros scored his second of the season. Mendez, Bednarczyk, Karki, and Zappetta all recorded assists in the win. The Cougars totaled 17 shots, with 10 on target. Anargyros paced the team with seven shots, with four on frame. In goal, Bullock made six saves.
The Cougars return to Upper Midwest Athletic Conference action on Tuesday as they host Martin Luther College at 4:30 p.m.
