MORRIS, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris men's soccer team drew 1-1 with Martin Luther College in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference play Tuesday evening in Morris, Minn.
Patrick Bednarcyzk fired the first shot on target of the game in the 12th minute, but his attempt was turned away. The Cougars kept the pressure on until a foul in the box gave UMM a penalty kick.
Jake Anargyros stepped up to take the shot, but his attempt was saved.
Justin Page sent a great cross into the box that found the head of
Luis Mendez, but the ball bounced off the crossbar. In the 41st minute,
Dutch Bullock made his first save of the game, bringing an end to the scoreless first half.
It took less than a minute for Angel "Bam" Perez Leon to record the first shot of the second half. Minnesota Morris continued to test the goalkeeper until finally breaking through in the 76th minute. Anargyros sent a pass to Mendez, who beat the keeper for the opening goal of the game. The Knights answered back eight minutes later after a low-driven ball took a strange bounce and found its way to the back of the net. Anargyros had one final shot on goal, but the game ended in a 1-1 draw.
Mendez scored his first collegiate goal, while Anargyros picked up his first assist of the season. The Cougars outshot the Knights 25-7. Six of the UMM shots were on frame, with Bednarcyzk and Anargyros tallying two each and
Azariah Zappetta and Mendez recording one apiece. Bullock made two saves in the contest.
The Cougars continue their homestand as they host the University of Wisconsin-Superior on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
