St. Bonifacious, Minn. – The University of Minnesota, Morris women's soccer team snapped a two-game losing streak today (Oct. 23), winning 2-0 over host Crown.
The Cougars put the heat on early, outshooting the Storm 22-to-1 in the first half, and got early results with both goals coming in the first period.
After dominating the play early, Leah Parker (Minnetonka, Minn.) got the Cougars on the board with an unassisted tally at 20:12. It was her team leading 10th goal of the season – and third game-winner – and puts her in the team scoring lead with 22 points, two ahead of Zoe Bergstrom (Westminster, Colo.) with 20.
The Cougars kept the pressure on and logged five more shots over the next five minutes, including a pair that went off the post from Katie Kestner (Phoenix, Ariz.) and Parker.
After her near miss. Kestner left no doubt on her next attempt, finding the back of the net to put the Cougars up 2-0. It was Kestner's fifth goal of the season, and moves her season point total into double digits at 11.
The Cougars scaled back the pressure in the second half, taking just eight shots, and finished with a 30-to-3 edge over the Storm. Sixteen of their shots landed on goal keeping the Storm netminder busy as Merissa Mosher finished with 14 saves.
Cougar goalkeeper Emily Jacob (Minneapolis) had a light day between the pipes, facing just one shot on goal in logging her sixth shutout of the season.
At 7-8-2 on the season and 6-4-2 in conference play, the Cougars will look to get back to the .500 mark next week when they travel to Martin Luther for a 3:30 p.m. match on Oct. 29. They will then wrap up the regular season on Oct. 30 at Bethany Lutheran.
Crown falls to just 3-12-0 on the season and 2-9-0 in league action.
Today's win keeps the Cougars in a good spot to land the fourth and final spot in the UMAC tournament, which starts on Nov. 2.
