Morris, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Morris women's soccer team starts off conference play with a 5-0 win over Crown College today (Sept. 17) at Cougar Field at UMM.
Katie Kestner (Phoenix, Ariz.) wasted little time in putting the Cougars on the field, with the game winner in just the second minute of play. Kester scored on an assist from Taylor Meehan (Alexandria, Minn.) who logged a season high five points in the day.
Meehan led the Cougars with two goals to go along with her assist to Kestner.
Just 1:25 into the match, Kestner put UMM on the board, taking the ball from Meehan and unleashing a shot into the upper left corner, over the outstretched hand of the Storm goalkeeper.
Later in the match, Meehan got her first goal of the season, finding the back of the net in the 27th minute. Meehan took a pass from Sarah Timpane (St. Cloud, Minn.) and placed her shot right underneath the keeper for the 2-0 lead, which is where the score would stay heading into halftime.
Already in command in the game and up 2-0, the Cougars showed the rout was on just over 10 minutes after the break. Meehan had her second goal of the season, and second of the match, with a score off a corner kick and a cross as the 51:10 mark. Timpane got her second assist of the match and Meghan Laird (St. Michael, Minn.) got her first on the pass to Meehan.
The scoring did not stop there, as 44 seconds later UMM added another goal.Leah Parker (Minnetonka, Minn.) got her third goal of the season with a breakaway past the Crown defense and into the net. Parker streaked past the defense and across the open field before notching the unassisted tally at the 51:54 mark.
The Cougars then tacked on one more in the goal, as Zoe Bergstrom added the final score. Her third goal of the season, Bergstrom got a pass from Timpane and beat the keeper to the left at the 55:19 mark. The assist was Timpane's third helper of the game.
The Cougars snap a short two-match losing skid improve to 2-4 on the year, and open 1-0 in conference play. The women are back in action tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. against Northwestern at Cougar Field.
