Morris, Minn. – It took over 97 minutes, but the Minnesota Morris women's soccer team pulled out a 1-0 victory in the first overtime against visiting Crown in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) action today (Oct. 22.)
Morris (8-6-1, 6-3-1 UMAC) outshot Crown (0-14-1, 0-9-1 UMAC) 28-to-1 in the match, including 13 on goal, finally punching one in at the 97:06 mark when
Rachel Berns (Stillwater, Minn.) finished off a cross into the box from
Taylor Meehan (Alexandria, Minn.).
It's the second goal of the season for Berns, and her first game-winner. She finished with a career high nine shots in the match as the Cougars owned the possession all game.
Christina Mollan (Menomonie, Wis.) and
Katie Kestner (Phoenix, Ariz.) each finished with four shots on the day, as six different Cougars posted multiple attempts in the match.
The Cougars posted a season high 14 corners as well, creating several nice chances, with shots and headers going high or wide, or right to Storm goalkeeper Hillary Brondsema. Brondsema finished with 12 saves on the day, doing all she could to keep her team in the game.
The Cougars fired off 16 shots in the season half alone, including seven over a six minute span with two corners mixed in late in the match.
In the extra session the Cougars kept the pressure on, taking three shots within 70 seconds, before Berns won it in the 98th minute.
The win, coupled with a Martin Luther loss, secures a UMAC tournament berth for the Cougars, but with St. Scholastica winning, the Cougars are also officially denied a chance at hosting a first round game.
With two games next week, they can secure a third place finish, staring when Martin Luther visits Morris on Oct. 26. Kickoff with the Knights is at 12:00 p.m.
