UMAC Women's Soccer Championship

Riding three consecutive wins to close the regular season, the Minnesota Morris women's soccer team will hit the road for the first round of the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Tournament.

Entering the tournament as the No. 3 seed, the Cougars will travel to No. 2 seed Northwestern in the first round, kicking off at 2:00 p.m. on Nov. 1 in St. Paul.  The other semifinal is top-seeded St. Scholastica hosting fourth seeded Bethany Lutheran.

Northwestern enters as the defending UMAC Tournament Champions, defeating St. Scholastica 1-0 in Duluth last season.

The Cougars finished the regular season 10-6-1 overall, with an 8-3-1 record in UMAC play. Northwestern had an identical 8-3-1 UMAC mark, with an 11-6-1 overall mark.  In the regular season, the Eagles took a pair of one-goal games from the Cougars, winning a wild one 3-2 in St. Paul in September, before taking a 1-0 match in Morris just last weekend.

This is also the first time since that the current group of seniors will face someone other than St. Scholastica in the opening game of the tournament, as the Saints have ended the Cougars season in each of the last three seasons. Last year in the semifinals, the Cougars fell 1-0, with the Saints scoring with less than two minutes left for the win.

The last time the Cougars and Eagles squared off in the post season was in 2007, with the Cougars taking and 2-0 win to advance to the UMAC Championship. Then against St. Scholastica in the title game, regulation ended tied with CSS eventually taking the win 4-3 in a shootout.

The Cougars will also be in search of their first ever NCAA Tournament berth, as the UMAC Tournament champion receives an automatic bid to the DIII National Tournament.
