Morris, Minn. – The Minnesota Morris women's soccer team dropped a 4-1 decision to Augsburg today (Oct. 4), in nonconference action at Cougar Field.

Augsburg (5-5-1) got a pair of quick goals in the first half, opening the scoring in just the fourth minute. A long free kick into the box was mishandled by Cougar goalkeeper RiAnne Metz (Bismarck, N.D.), and with a scrum of players in front of the net, the Auggie's Olivia Muyres was left open to knock the ball in for the score.

Less than 10 minutes later, Augsburg's Courtney Gamrath got the eventual game-winner, scoring on a long shot from out in front of the net that beat Metz to her right.

Morris (6-5-0) was able to punch one in just before the end of the half, when Katie Kestner (Phoenix, Ariz.) executed a perfect header off a Zoe Bergstrom (Westminster, Colo.) corner at the 41:02 mark to pull the Cougars within one.

The Cougars were fortunate to go into the half down one, as Augsburg controlled much of the play, taking 14 shots in the period to just two for the Cougars. Metz kept the game close, charting seven of her 10 total saves in the first half, stopping several Auggie scoring chances.

Augsburg went up 3-1 with a Bri Clark goal at the 53:53 mark, before Brook Vroman added their final tally in the final minute, taking advantage of another loose ball.

The Cougars notched just five shots in the match, compared to 22 for the Auggies. The shot disparity is the widest for the Cougars since Hamline held a 23-to-4 edge in the second game of the season, while the 14 shots on goal is the most UMM has allowed all season.

Leah Parker (Minnetonka, Minn.) led the way with two shots, while reigning UMAC Player of the Week Christina Mollan (Menomonie, Wis.) was held without a shot for the first time since Sept. 17, and just the third time all season. Metz' 10 saves tied a career high, matching her mark against St. Scholastica from Sept. 23.

The Cougars will get a nice long break to regroup, as they are off until Oct. 15 & 16 when they travel to Northland and St. Scholastica respectively, beginning the second half of UMAC play. The Cougars wrapped up the first half in third place with a4-2 league record, behind one-loss Northwestern and unbeaten St. Scholastica.

They will then return home on Oct. 20, hosting Northwestern at 1:30 p.m.
