Collegeville, Minn. - The Minnesota Morris men's cross country team took a fourth place finish in their first meet of the season, opening up at the Saint John's Invitational on Sept. 9.

The top finisher for Morris was freshman Martin Zais (Hudson, Wis.), who finished 22nd with a time of 28:59. His mark breaks the previous freshman record,  held by former standout Luke Toso. Zias also finds himself already among the Cougars' best, as his time ranks sixth in program history.

“Many of the runners are well ahead of where they started last season and are looking for big improvements over the course of the season,” head coach Jeremy Karger Gatzow said.

Charles Abraham (Cambridge, Minn.) was next for the Cougars placing 44th with a time of 30:34, with Daniel Tiernan (Morris, Minn.) placing 49th and Greg Schumacher (Wabasha, Minn.) placing 62nd with times of 30:41 and 31:18 respectively.

Morris finished fourth as a team with a time of 2:33.02, the top placing Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) team.

The Cougars will now head to Northfield, Minn. to take part in the St. Olaf Invitational, this Saturday Sep. 17.
