Morris, Minn. – The Minnesota Morris women's soccer team took St. Scholastica to overtime today (Sept. 23), but had their effort spoiled when the Saints scored less than five minutes into the extra session for the game's only score and the 1-0 win.
St. Scholastica (5-4-0, 4-0 UMAC) capitalized on the only shot of the extra session, with Kelsey Kehtel scoring off a corner kick from Logan Williamson. The Saints controlled much of the play on the day – taking 10 first half shots in their way to 19 on the day – but were held out of the net until the game's final play.
Morris (3-4-0, 1-2-0) was not without its chances though, as they fired off nine total shots in the game, including six in an action-packed first half. The nine shots were the most allowed by the Saints in four Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) games, and the most by a non-MIAC opponent all season.
Katie Kestner (Phoenix, Ariz.) and Rachel Berns (Stillwater, Minn.) led the Cougars with three shots apiece, with Kestner providing a near miss to put the Cougars ahead in the second half. Early in the period, the Cougars were forcing play down in the Saint zone, earning one of their five corners in the match.
Zoe Bergstrom (Westminster, Colo.) line up the corner and sent a beautiful serve in front of the net for Kestner. Kestner out-jumped the defense to get her head on the ball, but sent it just over the cross bar and the game remained scoreless.
The Cougars final chance came with 11 minutes left, when the last of Berns' three shots went wide.
The Saints had 11 of their shots go on goal, the most the Cougars have allowed this season. UMM goalkeeper RiAnne Metz (Bismarck, N.D.) finished with 10 saves in the match, a career high for the junior and a season high for the Cougars.
The Cougars will get a day off tomorrow and return to Cougar Field on Sunday, Sept. 25 to wrap up the weekend, hosting Northland at 2:00 p.m.
