ST. BONIFACIUS, Minn. – It was a back and forth battle on Saturday night as Crown (1-6, 1-5 UMAC) scored last to beat the Cougars (0-7, 0-6 UMAC) 30-27.
Cody Hickman recorded 14 total tackles and now sits eighth all time in NCAA Division III for total tackles in a career.
Evan Guffey had four catches for 112 yards and three touchdowns to lead the offense. The defense forced three turnovers on the day but unfortunately the Cougars could not pick up the victory.
The Storm scored a touchdown in opening minutes of the first quarter, scoring off a 65 yard run. The Cougars answered just 19 seconds later scoring on a 37 yard pass from
Donnie Mavencamp to Guffey. Crown took a 14-7 lead on another quick scoring drive. They would then tack on another touchdown to make it 21-7 after a 25 yard run.
Morris again had a quick response, as Guffey hauled in a 60 yard touchdown pass from Mavencamp just over a minute later. Just before the half Chad Anenson converted a 31 yard field goal to give Crown a 24-14.
The Cougars took advantage of a Crown turnover to score their first rushing touchdown of the year to pull within four after the PAT failed. Morris finished with a season high 84 yards rushing in the game.
Just as the fourth quarter started Guffey grabbed a 12 yard pass from Mavencamp to give Morris a 27-24 lead. On the following drive Crown went 62 yards on 13 plays taking up 7:27 on the clock to take lead back at 30-27.
Minnesota Morris drove down to the Crown 31 but turned the ball over on downs. The Cougars would force a punt with 15 seconds left in the game but needed to go 78 yards in that time. The last second throw was incomplete and the Cougars fell 30-27.
