MORRIS, Minn. – After a quick start on Saturday, the Cougars (0-8, 0-7 UMAC) could not get much going offensively in the final three quarters and fell 13-12 to Martin Luther (2-6, 1-6 UMAC).
Logan Nordly had a career high 18 tackles to help the defense, who held the Knights under 270 yards of total offense
Martin Luther struck first with a 65 yard rushing touchdown just two plays into the game from Matt Olson, as he went right up the middle. After the ball changed possessions via the punt twice, the Cougars drove the ball into the Martin Luther half of the field thanks to four straight good running plays. They had first and ten at the 15 yard line of the Knights a play before
Donnie Mavencamp hit
Dalton DeGraffenreid on a 17 yard pass play to pull the Cougars within one.
Morris scored on their next drive as well when Mavencamp hit
Taylor Holleman on a seven yard touchdown on fourth down. The Cougars went for two but the pass was intercepted by the Knights. Olson struck again for the Knights with 11:11 left in the second quarter giving Martin Luther a 13-12 lead after their two point conversion failed.
The two teams struggled to get much going the rest of the half as Martin Luther took a one point lead into the locker room. The Knight lost their starting quarterback late in first half which slowed their offense down a bit.
Good defense continued to be the theme in the third quarter as both teams forced fumbles midway through the third. Neither team threatened to score in the third quarter as the score remained 13-12 with the Knights leading.
The Knights tried to ice the game with five minutes left, going for a fourth and one and their own 43 but the Cougars stopped them, taking over at the 40 yard line. After a good first play from scrimmage a penalty took the Cougars backward. On third and 22 Martin Luther picked off a pass and took over with 3:03 left. They would ice the win with a first down on a third and one to win the game 13-12.
