Morris, Minn. – The University of Minnesota, Morris women's soccer team fought back from a 1-0 deficit today (Oct. 17), only to see a penalty kick goal by visiting St. Scholastica become the final decision in a 2-1 loss to the Saints.
St. Scholastica (9-4-1, 9-0-1 UMAC) scored late in the first half and held a 1-0 lead for much of the second half, until Minnesota, Morris' (6-7-2, 5-3-2 UMAC) Crystal Zastrow (Carlos, Minn.) tied the match with the first goal of her career.
Zastrow took a pass from Leah Parker (Minnetonka, Minn.) and dribbled through traffic to the front of the net, where she beat the keeper to the right for the tying goal. With less than 20 minutes left to play the Cougars had new life and the momentum.
However, less than 10 minutes later the play had shifter back down to the Cougar zone. The Saints had control and were on the attack when a foul was called on the Cougars inside the penalty box, giving Saints a penalty kick.
The Saint's Joey Moore made good on the kick, sneaking it just under the cross bar for the game-winner. With just 15 minutes left, the Cougars were again trailing.
Minnesota, Morris' best chance to get back on the board came as the final seconds were ticking off the clock. With under a minute to go, the Cougars' Katie Kestner (Phoenix, Ariz.) fired off a corner kick that found a lane right to Meghan Laird (St. Michael, Minn.). Laird's shot came up blocked by the Saint defense, however, and the remainder of the final minute ran off in the 2-1 loss.
The Cougars were held to just four shots in the match, with Zastrow burring their only shot on goal. St. Scholastica took 10 shots on the day, finishing with five of them on net.
The setback ends the Cougars five-game unbeaten streak and drops them back below .500 on the season. In UMAC action they remain in the top-four, and are in good position for a spot in the UMAC Tournament. The Cougars can begin to streghthen their bid for a tournament spot on Oct. 22 at Northwestern. Kick off is set for 3:30 p.m.
It was also senior day at Cougar Field as Emily Jacob (Minneapolis), Rachel Harstad (Hampton, Minn.) and Liz Vold (Sartell, Minn.) all played their final home game.
