New Ulm, Minn. – The Minnesota, Morris women's soccer won for the fifth time in their last seven matches today (Oct. 29), claiming a 3-2 win over Martin Luther.
Liz Vold got the scoring started early for the Cougars, with a goal in just the fifth minute.
Unfortunately it wouldn't stand for long, as less that 10 minutes later the Knights tied it up, and in the 20th minute took their first lead at 2-1.
Martin Luther (7-11-1, 4-8-1) didn't have their lead much longer than the Cougars, as Leah Parker made it a tie match in the 31st minute. Minnesota Morris (8-8-2, 8-3-2) used eight shots and six corner kicks in the first half for the tie.
Early in the second half, Parker got back on the board, scoring the game-winner on an assist from Melissa Denler. Parker fired off five shots on the day, making the two that landed on frame count in giving the Cougars the win.
The win is their second straight and moves them within a chance of third place in the final standings. As it now sits, the Cougars are three points behind Bethany Lutheran – tomorrow's opponent – for third. The Cougars tied Bethany at home in their previous game, so a win this time around would vault UMM into third place, and avoid league champ St. Scholastica in the first round of the UMAC Tournament.
Minnesota, Morris will be on the road in the first round on Nov. 2, with a win sending them to Northwestern, and a loss matching them up with St. Scholastica.
