Mankato, Minn. – The University of Minnesota, Morris women's soccer team saw a goal in the final five minutes of the first half be enough today (Oct. 30), as they fell 1-0 to host Bethany Lutheran to end the regular season.
The Cougars out-shot the Vikings 9-to-6 in the match, but were bettered 4-to-2 in shots on goal. In the first half alone, the Cougars held a 7-to-4 edge in shots, but put just one on frame as the Vikings worked for the lead.
With the first half winding down, Bethany Lutheran (13-5-2, 9-3-2 UAMC) made one count, scoring in the 42nd minute for the 1-0 lead. Kelli Kitzmann used a pair of assists to beat Cougar goalkeeper Emily Jacob for the eventual game-winner.
Minnesota, Morris (8-9-2, 7-5-2 UMAC) got multiple shots from four different players, including a match high three from Katie Kestner, but struggled to convert.
The loss snaps a two-game winning streak for the Cougars, and ends a run where they were beaten just twice in nine games.
Coming into the day, a win could have moved the Cougars up a spot in the league standings and dropping the Vikings to fourth. As it is, though, UMM finishes the regular season in fourth place, and now draws the unenviable task of hitting the road to take on regular season champion St. Scholastica in the first round. Bethany Lutheran ends in third and will travel to Northwestern in the first round.
The UMAC tournament gets underway with first round games on Tuesday, Nov. 2, and the Cougars will be traveling to Duluth for their match-up with the Saints. The winner on Tuesday will advance to the UMAC Championship on Nov. 6 with a berth in the NCAA Tournament on the line.
Official times are still to be determined.
